In just the past month there have been nearly 50,000 job cuts across the technology sector. Large and small tech companies went on a hiring spree in over the past several years due to a demand for their products, software and services surged with millions of people working remotely. However, even with all of the layoffs announced in recent weeks, most tech companies are still vastly larger than they were three years ago. Alphabet becomes the latest tech giant to substantially slash its workforce
Google's parent company Alphabet announced on Friday it would eliminate 12,000 jobs worldwide, more than 6% of its workforce, after years of robust growth and hiring.
Alphabet's CEO Sundar Pichai explained the decision, saying that the company had rapidly expanded headcount in recent years "for a different economic reality than the one we face today." In an email to employees he wrote that he takes "full responsibility for the decisions that led us here."

On Friday, CEO Sundar Pichai cited what has become a familiar story: The tech giant hired too aggressively during the pandemic boom.
Google and WeWork are the latest companies to announce layoffs in what has been a brutal few months for tech workers. On Friday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the search giant was cutting approximately 12,000 jobs. The cuts span the globe and myriad departments at Google's parent company Alphabet.
